The project was surrounded by secrecy and dogged by controversy from the very beginning. Starting in the late '70s, engineers at Lockheed's legendary "Skunkworks" developed a revolutionary new fighter that was destined to transform aerial combat forever. Little more than a decade later, the F-117 NIGHTHAWK STEALTH fighter saw combat for the first time in Panama.
From the political gaffes and squabbles that swirled around the top-secret project to missions over Iraq in both Gulf Wars, HEAVY METAL tells the complete story of one of the most important planes ever developed. Experts reveal the basics of stealth technology, strategists detail the role that the Stealth fighter plays in modern combat operations, and pilots provide an up-close view of its capabilities and accomplishments.
